Alstom contract worth Euro 500M at Santo Antonio

19 September 2008

The 3150MW Santo Antonio plant is under construction on the Madeira river in the state of Rondonia, near the border with Bolivia. The first of its 44 bulb units are to be operational in 2012. The winning bidder was a consortium led by Odebrecht and included alstom Hydro.

A few months ago, Alstom said it would be supplying 19 bulb turbines for the plant. In the latest announcement it said that 22 generators as well as half of the plant's hydro-mechanical and lifting equipment would be supplied. The contract with Odebrecht is on the basis of engineering, procurement and construction (EPC).

Alstom has a JV with another consortium member - Bardella, a Brazilian firm - to build a manufacturing plant in Porto Velho, Rondonia, to serve the hydro sector in the country and the wider Amazon region. The JV is called Industria Metalurgica e Mecanica da Amazonia (IMMA), and the facility is to be operational by the end of 2009.

The hydro-mechanical and lifting equipment is to be supplied from the Porto Velho facility, and the turbines and generators are to be manufactured at alstom-hydro's facility at Taubate, Sao Paulo.

Santo Antonio is one of two major projects of the 6450MW 'Madeira Scheme'. The other is the 3300MW Jirau plant.

Alstom Hydro is a JV of French companies Alstom and Bouygues.
