Alstom starts building new hydro facility in Spain

17 April 2015

Alstom has announced that construction has started on a new hydro-dedicated industrial centre in Bilbao, Spain.

The site, which will replace the firm's current facility in Valle de Trápaga, Vizcaya, is scheduled to be inaugurated at the end of this year, and required an investment of EUR 12 million.

The current centre is one of the nine sites operated by the company in the hydroelectric energy business. It specialises in small and medium power generators (up to 50MW) and also manufactures diesel generators for hydroelectric projects worldwide, with 80% of its production exported, mainly to Latin America, Asia and Europe. Until 2013, the Bilbao centre supplied generators that equipped hydroelectric facilities in 22 countries, especially in Turkey (585 MVA), Italy (536 MVA), Norway (296 MVA), Albania (143 MVA) and Switzerland (102 MVA), totalling 2400 MVA.

Alstom's new industrial centre in Bilbao will be located in the city of Ortuella. The plant, placed on a 10,000m2 plot, will have a floor area of 6300m2, among which 5000m2 dedicated to industrial activities and 1300 m2 used for offices and engineering.
