Andritz Hydro is to upgrade the electromechanical equipment at the Shardarinskaya hydropower plant in southern Kazakhstan.

The company won a EUR75M contract from JSC Shardarinskaya HPP, a subsidiary of the state-owned Kazakh utility company Samruk Energy, to refurbish four Kaplan turbines with a runner diameter of 5.3m. Under the terms of the deal, their output will be increased by around 20% from the current 26MW to 31.5MW per machine unit. The order also includes the supply of generators and new control equipment, as well as modernization of the auxiliary systems of the hydropower plant

Located on the Syr-Darya River, the project was originally commissioned in 1967. Completion of the upgrade is scheduled for the second half of 2017.
