BHEL commissions new unit at Rampur project, India

Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) has successfully commissioned a new 68MW hydro generating unit at the Rampur hydroelectric project in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, the fourth of six units commissioned at the 412MW project.

The first three units were placed in commercial operation in May 2014, the fourth was commissioned last week, and BHEL is expected to commission the remaining two units shortly.

Rampur project is located on the River Satluj, a major tributary of the Indus Basin in Himachal Pradesh. The project is being developed by SJVN Limited.

BHEL's scope of work in the project includes supply, erection and commissioning of 6 x 68MW Francis turbines operating at a head of 119m with matching synchronous generators of 200rpm, static excitation system, main inlet valves, digital governors, state-of-the-art control & monitoring system (SCADA), associated station auxiliaries, Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) and electrical & mechanical balance of plant (BoP).

BHEL has a long standing association with SJVN, having worked on its first hydroelectric project - the 1500 MW Nathpa Jhakri project, which was commissioned in 2003-04.
