Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has won a contract to deliver the hydro generating sets and associated electromechanical equipment for the 444MW Vishnugad Pipalkoti in Uttarakhand, India.

Awarded by THDCIL (formerly known as Tehri Hydro Development Corporation Limited), the Rs.4,220 million EPC contract covers four hydro generating sets of 111MW capacity each, with vertical Francis turbines and matching hydro generators. The project is to be executed in a 48-month schedule.

The hydro generating sets are to be supplied by BHEL's Bhopal unit, with the transformers and control & monitoring system supplied by the company's Jhansi unit and Electronics Division, Bangalore, respectively. Erection and commissioning is to be carried out by BHEL's Power Sector - Northern Region.

This is the second major order for a hydro scheme in Uttarakhand awarded to BHEL in 2014. Earlier this year, it announced it was to supply equipment for the 2x60MW Vyasi after winning a contract from Uttarakhand Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (UJVNL).
