Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has been awarded a Rs.3210 million ($52 million) contract by Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) to deliver hydro generating sets and associated electromechanical equipment for the 206MW Shahpurkandi hydroelectric project.
The deal, awarded following an international tender, will see BHEL design, manufacture, supply, install and commission equipment for the project. The hydro generating sets are to be supplied by BHEL's Bhopal unit, while the transformers and Control & Monitoring system will come from the company's Jhansi unit and Electronics Division, Bangalore, respectively. BHEL's Power Sector - Northern Region will erect and commission the equipment.
Located in the Gurdaspur district of Punjab, near the J&K border, the project is being built on the canal from Shahpurkandi Barrage to Madhopur headworks, downstream of the existing Ranjit Sagar Dam. It will include seven hydro generating sets located in two powerhouses - Power House-I (3x33MW) and Power House-II (3x33MW + 1x8MW).
