Brookfield closes Twin Cities buy, wins LIHI OK for Black River

7 April 2008

The deal to acquire the 18MW Twin Cities plant was made in mid-2007 and the companies had hoped the transaction would complete before the end of last year, subject to regulatory approvals. The plant produces approximately 100GWh per year, which is sold to the Midwestern wholesale market.

Brookfield is building a 10MW plant downstream of Twin Cities, and hopes to complete the project later this year.

The Low Impact Hydropower Institute (LIHI) has certified the company’s Black River project, which includes six plants licensed by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).

LIHI noted that Brookfield is its most active client and Black River was the company’s seventh application for certification. In total, the seven LIHI-approved schemes include 36 dams with a combined installed capacity of slightly more than 300MW.
