Bypassing Hoover dam

4 November 2002

THE PHOENIX, US, OFFICE OF environmental consulting firm AMEC will provide its services in support of a US$198M project to build an alternate crossing to the narrow highway over the Hoover dam on the Colorado river.

The new crossing is expected to be completed by 2007, and will include a four-lane divided highway and a 579m long bridge that will bypass the current roadway.

The existing road, Highway 93, was built in 1936 across the dam top and is full of curves and rock walls that limit visibility for motorists. It also has inadequate turning room for emergency and disabled vehicles.
