22 September 2006

Endesa will buy all of the certified reductions in greenhouse gases in three wind farms and a hydro plant in China in 2006 - 2012, which could reach a total of 2.7M tonnes, from Huaneng and Jiuquan Sanyuan Hydro Power.

The agreement includes wind farms at Changdao, Qidong and Weihai with a combined capacity of 188MW and the 26.55MW Gansu hydro plant.

UK gas major Centrica, meanwhile, is also to purchase carbon credits from a project in China under the CDM in its first deal with carbon brokers Climate Change Capital.

As a member of a syndicate Centrica will buy Certified Emission Reduction (CER) certificates which can be used with the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS). The company has also acquired a minority stake in a carbon fund managed by Climate Change Capital to purchase further carbon credits.
