China sees higher prices an aid to hydro development

22 September 2009

The country’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) said the move would bring the price of electricity from hydro plants in line with thermal plants. However, a pilot scheme is mooted and no schedule has been released.

The China Electricity Council said that the total installed capacity of hydro power in the country at the end of last year was approximately 171.5GW. This is just over a firth of the country’s total generation assets.

The Ministry of Water Resources expects China to have 300GW of installed hydro power capacity by 2020.
