Eight of the plant's 26 units are already owned by CYP, and said it planned to buy the other 700MW units for an estimate RMB 107.5B (US$15.75B).

In total, the company would acquire the balance of 12.6GW of installed capacity over units 9-26 in the plant.

The first unit at Three Gorges went into operation in 2003. There are 14 units on the left bank powerhouse, which were the first to be installed, over 2003-5, and there are 12 units on the right bank powerhouse, taking the total installed capacity of the plant to 18.2GW.
