Clarification sought on Baglihar

4 April 2002

Pakistan has sought clarification from India on a report that India has commenced construction of a gated-structure on the Chenab river, for diversion of its water for the 450MW Baglihar hydro power project in Kashmir.

Pakistan considers such diversions to be violations of the Indus Basin Treaty of 1960.

Under the treaty, brokered by the World Bank, Pakistan has exclusive rights to use water of western rivers - namely Indus, Jelum and Chenab - while the eastern rivers - Ravi, Sutlej and Beas - have been assigned to India.
