Consortium to build Tajikistan hydro plant

17 June 2004

The 670MW plant will be built on the Vakhsh River at a cost of around USD483m. Its construction will allow Tajikistan to meet its electricity needs and export surplus electricity to Afghanistan.

The project is the first in a planned series of economic projects within the Eurasian Economic Community (EurAsEC). EurAsEC’s members are Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan. Armenia, Moldova and Ukraine have observer status.
