Construction starts at Chonais project, Scotland

6 February 2014

Construction work is well underway at the 2MW Chonais hydro project near Loch Carron in Scotland, Green Highlands Renewables has announced.

The high-head, run-of-river scheme is being developed by Green Highlands in a joint venture with Albion Ventures. Tendering and financial completion for the project was concluded in 2013, and construction started at the end of November 2013.

The first phase of construction will deliver the necessary site compounds and access routes to all construction areas. Once this is complete, work will start on the intake, weir and powerhouse. Civil works on the project are due for completion in September 2014 with delivery of the turbine following shortly afterwards. The scheme is scheduled for full commissioning by December 2014.

The project has been submitted for preaccreditation under the UK Government's Feed in Tariff scheme.
