Dam removal to start on Penobscot River, US

11 June 2012

The Great Works Dam is owned by the Penobscot River Restoration Trust. Removal work on the dam is anticipated last through mid-November, with contractor R.F. Jordan and Sons removing approximately 10,000 cubic yards of material from the river, including concrete, timber, and rock.

The dam removal is the start of a major project for the Trust, which will also involve the removal of the Veazie Dam and decommissioning and bypass of the Howland Dam. The project is expected to be complete in 2015.

The trust bought the three dams from previous owner PPL Corporation in 2010 to facilitate their removal or bypass.
