Dynamic effects in micro hydro modelling

9 March 2004

Since micro hydro schemes are equipped with small inertia turbines, the dynamic effects induced by the overspeed of turbo-generators should be considered in the early stages of design. For a better characterisation of the system behaviour, a parametric analysis is presented, in order to assist in choosing the most appropriate solution between different design scenarios. In the absence of characteristic turbine curves a new technique to simulate turbine operation is presented, which is adequate for the analysis of micro hydro transient conditions, in which aspects related to runaway and gate effects should be analysed. This technique, based on a dynamic orifice concept for turbine operation as the main exciter component of the system, was validated through Suter parameters obtained from pump curves data available in literature. The most severe hydro transients in hydro schemes are normally due to extreme operating conditions, especially after a full load rejection or a turbine stoppage
