EGAT to take part in Salween hydro dam project

1 December 2002

ELECTRICITY GENERATING Authority of Thailand (EGAT) will invest in building a dam on the Salween river bordering Mynamar and Thailand. EGAT's board has already approved the purchase of power generated by the US$5.5B project.

Under current proposals, the Salween river project is expected to supply electricity to EGAT by 2013. The dam has the potential to produce 5000MW of electricity, according to a study by Energy Power Development Corporation of Japan. EGAT is proposing to finance, develop, and operate the project under a time frame agreed with the Mynamar authorities.

After the concession expires, EGAT and Mynamar are to hold an equal stake in the project.
