Infrastructure and construction firm Empresas ICA is to build a 120m high, 784m long dam on the Rio Baluarte in an $89 million contract awarded by the Federal Water Commission of Mexico (Conagua).

The Mexico-based firm won the public works contract for Santa Maria dam following a competitive bidding process. The dam, which is expected to be completed in January 2018, will supply water primarily for agricultural use in Sinaloa.

It will have a total storage capacity of around 980Mm3, to irrigate approximately 24,000ha of farmland in the Rosario and Escuinapa municipalities.
