As natural gas prices continue to rise, the Canadian Hydropower Association (CHA) has issued a public statement emphasising that hydro power offers, among its many advantages, stable and low electricity rates.
‘While Albertans have just seen their residential electricity rates double on 1 January 2001, residents in Quebec, Manitoba, British Columbia, and Newfoundland and Labrador - where hydro power represents more than 80% of the total electricity production - have been paying the same rates for several years now. These are among the lowest electricity rates in North America,’ says Pierre Fortin, CHA executive director and spokesperson.
In addition to offering stable and low rates, CHA says hydro power is a reliable source of electricity that can respond almost immediately to fluctuating demands for electricity. So, as nearly 62% of Canada’s electricity comes from hydro power, Canadians are partly protected from the type of skyrocketing prices caused by increased demands that Californians have experienced.
