Evacuations as earthen dam breaches in Grand Canyon

18 August 2008

On Saturday, the Northern Arizona high country received heavy rainfall that resulted in partial flooding of Supai Canyon - a popular destination for hikers and campers. Yesterday, officials learned that the Redlands dam breached, allowing a high volume of water to rush down Cataract Canyon in a westerly direction eventually feeding into Supai Canyon.

The dam is located on Havasu Creek, which feeds the Colorado river.

Evacuees have been sent to an American Red Cross shelter in Peach Springs, Arizona.
