Three people have died and one person is missing in flooding after water was released from the Sultan Abu Bakar Dam in the Bertam Valley, Malaysia, newswires have reported.
Dam operator Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) said it released the water from the dam on 23 October in a controlled manner 'to avoid a disaster of catastrophic magnitude'. It said spillway operation was necessary to avoid flooding the entire Bertam Valley.
Heavy rains and flash floods around Ringlet caused an overflow into Lake Ringlet that surpassed maximum levels. TNB said it had taken all necessary steps to cooperate with the security forces, local authorities and the Head of Development and Security Committee (JKKK) Bertam Valley, before releasing the water according to established operating procedures.
