FERC gives prelim permits to Scott's Mill, Snyder Falls Creek

20 May 2009

The permit for the Scott's Mill project has been given to Scott's Mill Hydropower, LLC, and a competing application was denied to Liberty University, Inc, because it was the second to be filed.

FERC said there was no obvious difference in the merits of the respective applications based on outline plans submitted, and that the call on the permit was based solely on timing of the respective applications.

The project would be built on the James river in Virginia. Scott's Mill Hydropower plans a 3.6MW, four-unit plant, to generate 14.9GWh of electricity per year. The Liberty University plan was for a 4.8MW plant comprising four units, and would generate 10.5GWh per year.

The Snyder Creek Falls project is being developed by Cordova Electric Cooperative, and is located near Cordova in Alaska.

Snyder Creek falls is to have one generating unit with an installed capacity of 3MW and is to generate 10GWh-13GWh of electricity per year. In addition, the project would feature a more than 40m high concrete gravity dam.
