Fire reported at Hoover Dam, US

20 July 2022

The US Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) has confirmed that the A5 transformer at Hoover Dam caught fire at approximately 10 a.m. (PDT) on 19 July, with no injuries to visitors or employees reported.

International news reports showed a video of large explosion at the facility. The fire was confirmed in the turbine house, but USBR said it was extinguished at approximately 10:30 a.m. Regional Director Jacklynn (Jaci) L. Gould said there was no risk to the power grid and power is still being generated from the powerhouse.

USBR is now investigating the cause of the fire and will provide additional updates as they are available.
