First transformer tested for Volzhskaya project, Russia

15 August 2016

A joint venture of Power Machines and Toshiba has manufactured and tested the first 500kV autotransformer with a capacity of 267 MVA for the modernization of RusHydro’s Volzhskaya hydropower plant.

The first of four autotransformers has been shipped to the customer, with the second unit under testing and the remaining two near completion. Specialists from the JV are to supervise installation of the units and train RusHydro personnel in operation.

Taking into consideration the high voltage rating of the transformers, special requirements were used for their design and manufacture, including requirements for the cleanliness of the production premises. The transformers manufactured for Volzhskaya P are equipped with a sophisticated monitoring system capable of analyzing gas and moisture content and of measuring partial discharges.
