FirstEnergy completes hydro sale

FirstEnergy Corp has sold 11 hydroelectric stations, including the 451MW Seneca pumped storage project, to Harbor Hydro Holdings, a subsidiary of LS Power Equity Partners II, completing a US$395M agreement originally announced in September 2013.

The 11 stations included in the sale have a total capacity of 527MW and were owned by FirstEnergy Generation, LLC, Allegheny Energy Supply Company, LLC and Green Valley Hydro, LLC. The sale includes the Seneca project in Pennsylvania, together with the Allegheny Lock & Dam 5 (6MW); Allegheny Lock & Dam 6 (7MW) and the Lake Lynn (52MW) also in Pennsylvania; as well as the Millville (3MW); Dam 4 (2MW); Dam 5 (1.2MW); Warren (750kW); and Luray (1.6MW) projects in West Virginia; and Shenandoah (860kW) and Newport (1.4MW) projects in Virginia. The 35 current employees at these power stations are being retained by the new owner.

FirstEnergy subsidiary Allegheny Generating Company continues to own 1200MW of the 3000MW Bath County Pumped-Storage Hydro facility in Warm Springs, Virginia. In addition, FirstEnergy subsidiary Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) continues to own 200MW of the 400MW Yards Creek pumped storage facility in Blairstown, New Jersey.
