Flooding crisis deepens in Central Europe

6 June 2013

At least 13 people have died and others are missing following the most severe flooding seen in centuries in Central Europe.

Floodwater is threatening parts of Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic, with rivers reaching their highest level in 400 years, newswires have reported.

Late yesterday the European Commission said eight people had died in the Czech Republic, three in Germany, while two people died and two were missing in Austria.

Two levees along the Danube and Isar rivers reportedly broke yesterday, leading to evacuations in the Bavarian town of Deggendorf.

Rescue operations and evacuations are currently underway in a number of other German towns, and work is being carried out to shore up a threatened dyke in Krems, Austria.
