The Pakistan government has given clearance to four major hydro power projects worth US$596.6M to be completed by June 2006.
Official sources in Islamabad said on 1 October 2002 that all the four projects were awaiting clearance by the Planning Commission which has been given after the removal of some objections by the sponsoring agency of the projects - the Water and Power Development Authority.
The Jinnah hydroelectric power project would cost US$228.8M with the Foreign Exchange Component (FEC) of US$112M. The project envisages construction of a 96MW hydroelectric power plant at Jinnah barrage at the Indus river in Punjab.
Allai Khawar hydroelectric power project would cost US$135.6M with US$52.5M FEC. The project envisages the construction of a 121MW hydro power plant on river Allai Khawar.
Duber Khawar power project, which had also been cleared by the Planning Commission, would cost US$149M with FEC of US$62.7M.
The project seeks to construct a 130MW hydro power plant at river Duber Khawar, which is a tributary of Indus River near Patan in NWFP.
Khan Khawar hydroelectric power project has been conceived to construct a 72MW hydro power plant at river Khan Khawar, which is a tributary of Indus River at Swat, NWFP.
The cost of the project is US$83M with FEC of US$40.7M. The scope of the project includes necessary civil works, electrical and mechanical equipment and transmission interconnection.
