France sets ambitious targets for renewables

15 January 2001

The French government’s energy efficiency programme has set a 21% target for the development of renewable sources of energy, including hydro power by 2010. France already produces about 14% of its power from hydro power, with an installed capacity of over 23,000MW, and needs to develop new sources to reach the 21% target. A US$67.9M fund to encourage hydroelectric development will be financed by a US$0.013/kWh consumer charge.
