Fresh deal for Niger

17 September 2001

NIGERIA HAS REACHED a new agreement with the Republic of Niger that will guarantee a steady power supply to Niger before the end of 2001.

The deal, in which Nigeria will supply an extra 45MW of electricity to Niger by the end of the year at an ‘economic rate’, was signed during talks between Nigerian Minister of Power and Steel Olusegun Agagu and Niger Minister Yahaya Baare in August 2001.

Officials said the deal guarantees a steady flow of water from Niger to Nigeria‘s strategic hydroelectric station at Kainji.
