A consortium led by GE Renewable Energy is to modernise the generating units and auxiliary services at the 1710MW São Simão Hydroelectric Power Plant in Brazil after signing a contract with SPIC Brasil.

The deal includes the supply of equipment for the turbines, generators and auxiliary systems, in addition to the entire project engineering and integration, assembly and commissioning of six generating units. The consortium also features Powerchina, who will be responsible for supplying the electrical and mechanical BOP, SDSC and hydromechanical systems.

"We know that the modernization of hydroelectric plants, the main source of clean and renewable energy in Brazil for decades, is essential to accelerate the energy transition. With this project, we reaffirm our commitment to support the generation of clean, affordable and reliable energy for millions of people,” commented Cláudio Trejger, president and CEO of GE Renewable Energy's Hydro division in Latin America. “Our teams are working to optimize the operations of the plants and improve their availability to our customers, so that they can make the most of their assets and available resources to meet the electricity demand in the country."

“The modernization prepares the São Simão Hydroelectric Power Plant for the future, reinforcing the efficiency and reliability of our main renewable energy generation asset in the country, which is being equipped with the most modern technology. The plant is located in an important and strategic region of electro-energy flow, being an important source for the national energy generation system,” added Adriana Waltrick, CEO of SPIC Brazil.

The nine-year project will cover the entire cycle of engineering, development, integration, supply, assembly and commissioning.  GE Renewable Energy’s unit in Taubaté will oversee the component acquisition and equipment manufacturing stages, working with partner suppliers.
