The project will help meet the demands of Ethiopia’s fast growing economy once complete in 2013. At the end of the country’s five-year Growth and Transformation Plan, power generation capacity will grow from the current 2000MW to 10,000MW. The €1.5B Gilgel Gibe III project will generate 1870MW towards this goal.

The project is being built on the Omo River, and features a 243m high roller compacted concrete dam.
