Glendoe offline until at least 2011, says SSE

12 November 2009

SSE reported that a ‘very substantial’ amount of debris was found following a rockfall at the project in August 2009, and confirmed that this was confined to a section near the top of the project’s tunnel. The company is now examining options in order to identify the best way to achieve a resumption of electricity generation at the site, including possible construction of a tunnel to by-pass the blockage, all of which will require a significant programme of work.

Glendoe only began operations at the end of 2008. It is the UK’s biggest conventional hydro plant built in a half a century.
