PAKISTAN'S WATER AND POWER Development Authority (Wapda) has signed a US$90M engineering, procurement and construction contract for the Gomal dam project, with CWHEC-HPE, a joint venture between two Chinese firms. National Development Consultants (NDC) has already been appointed as management consultant for the project.
At the signing ceremony, Wapda chief Zulfiqar Ali Khan said that the 17.4MW dam would be constructed on the Gomal river at Kajori Kach in South Waziristan, in four years time. It will be a roller compacted concrete dam, 133m high and 149m long. It will have a gross storage capacity of 1.4B m3 and will irrigate 66,000ha of land.
This is the second engineering, procurement and construction contract awarded in the public sector in Pakistan. The governments of Abu Dhabi and Saudi Arabia have provided US$50M and US$40M respectively for the project.
