Hitachi Energy expands transformer operations in Germany

22 February 2024

Hitachi Energy has announced a significant investment of more than €30 million in the expansion and modernization of its power transformer manufacturing facility in Bad Honnef, Germany. This investment is expected to be completed by 2026 and will result in the creation of up to 100 new jobs in the region. The expansion is a response to the increasing demand for transformers to support Europe's clean energy transition.

The Bad Honnef facility, which has been operational since 1906, is a key manufacturing location for Hitachi Energy in Europe. It specializes in the production of large power transformers, which are essential components of the electrical grid used to adjust the voltage level for efficient transmission and distribution.

Bruno Melles, Business Unit Transformers Managing Director at Hitachi Energy, emphasized the importance of this investment in light of the evolving energy landscape. He stated: "The Bad Honnef facility is one example of our commitment to expand our global footprint and capacity at speed to meet accelerating demand driven by the energy transition."

The investment will lead to an expansion of the facility to over 15,000 square meters, along with process enhancements aimed at optimizing operational performance and increasing manufacturing capacity. Over the years, the Bad Honnef factory has supplied transformers to numerous leading transmission system operators, utilities, and industries in Europe, including those involved in the strategic partnership with TenneT.

This expansion is part of a broader effort by Hitachi Energy to increase its capacity in Europe. In the previous year, the company expanded its production in Sweden and acquired power electronics companies eks Energy and COET.
