HydroWing expands presence with new base in Wales for tidal energy venture

HydroWing has inaugurated a new office in Wales, strategically positioned to bolster the development of its tidal stream energy project at Morlais on Anglesey.

Securing a contract through the latest round of the UK Government’s 'Contracts for Difference' allocation, HydroWing is set to embark on the 10MW project at Morlais, touted as the UK’s largest consented tidal energy scheme.

Richard Parkinson, CEO of Inyanga Marine Energy Group, the parent company of HydroWing, said: “Our goal is to emerge as the global leader in tidal array technology. The Morlais project is a pivotal step in this trajectory, and the establishment of our new office in Wales marks a crucial milestone for us.”

Situated at M-SParc, a science park on Anglesey affiliated with Bangor University, the new office will be under the guidance of Commercial Manager Osian Roberts. A native of Anglesey with extensive international experience in the offshore renewable energy sector, Roberts will lead a team based at M-SParc, contributing significantly to the employment landscape in the region.

Parkinson emphasized: “Commercialization of tidal stream energy has been hindered by high operations and maintenance costs. Our HydroWing technology directly addresses this challenge, poised to unlock the commercial viability of tidal stream energy globally, providing a low-cost, reliable source of renewable energy for generations to come.”

Distinguished by its unique patented modular design, HydroWing technology promises a substantial enhancement in the cost-efficiency and production of tidal stream energy, the company said.

Simon Cheeseman, Sector Lead on Wave and Tidal Energy at the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult, commended HydroWing's contribution, stating: “Tidal energy is a crucial part of the mix to achieve net zero targets globally. The team at Inyanga Marine Energy Group has unrivaled experience in the sector, having deployed more than half of all tidal stream energy devices worldwide. So it is great to see their immense knowledge and experience informing the design and deployment strategy for HydroWing, a technology that is helping deliver sector innovation.”

The HydroWing project at Morlais is scheduled for deployment in 2027.
