IMPSA in US$479M Belo Monte deal

18 February 2011

The deal, which follows a contract award certificate issued in August 2010, was signed on 7 February 2011, at the new offices of Norte Energía Consortium in the presence of Mr. Carlos Nascimento, consortium chairman, and other consortium directors

The contract includes the design, production, installation, supervision and commissioning of the entire scope of supply. Designed by IMPSA and produced at the company’s facilities in Suape, state of Pernambuco, the plant components will be installed and go into operation by October 2015.

Earlier this month it was announced that a consortium led by alstom, and including Voith Hydro and andritz, will supply 14 Francis turbine generator sets and six bulb units for the power plant in a deal worth Eur 500M (US$678M).

The $17B, 11.2GW Belo Monte project, to be located in the state of Para, will help Brazil meet soaring demand for electricity once developed. It has however faced fierce opposition from environmental groups concerned about negative impacts on the ecosystem and wildlife in the region.
