Investigation of compaction methods of embankment cores in high rainfall regions

25 May 2010

Many regions in the world have relatively high annual rainfall spread over the entire year, and only a short dry season. In these regions, the natural water content of the local impermeable soil is often above its optimum value, which makes it difficult to compact. The material is too wet and soft to be compacted by conventional heavy equipments regularly used in dam construction. In this paper a literature review of trends applied in the construction of embankment dam cores in such regions is presented, followed by an experimental procedure, as a rule for choosing the best compaction method for such soils. Finally, the procedure is evaluated by a field test, the results of which are included in the last section of this article, confirming the repeatability of the proposed rule at other similar sites.
