Invitation to prequalify: Karuma hydropower plant, Uganda

The Karuma project is one of the high priority projects in the country’s national development plan. It includes construction of a 600-700MW hydropower facility with an underground Power Station housing five turbines, located about 3km upstream of Karuma Bridge and 80km downstream of Lake Kyoga, on the River Nile.

The scope of work will include planning and engineering, civil construction including supply of equipment and materials, design, manufacturing, installation, training, testing and commissioning of hydro-mechanical and electro-mechanical equipment including auxiliary equipment as well as remedying the defects leading to successful operation and performance of the generating units.

Prequalification will be conducted in accordance with the Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Assets Act, 2003 of the Government of Uganda. Prequalification is open to contractors, joint ventures and consortia who are experienced in the turnkey mode of execution of hydroelectric projects of a similar nature, or those who have executed civil works such as dams, tunnels, and powerhouses as Contractors, Subcontractors or Management Contractors. Firms are free to form a Joint Venture/Consortium for the supply, erection and commissioning of the Equipment.

The Prequalification documents in English may be purchased by the interested bidders on submission of a written application to the address below upon payment of a non-refundable fee of Ushs.100, 000= (One Hundred Thousand Shillings Only) or its equivalent in a freely convertible currency.

Applications for prequalification must be delivered to the address below at or before 11.00 am, on 20th October 2010 clearly marked “Application to Pre-qualify for the Provision of Works Related to the Construction of Karuma Hydro Power Project”. Late submissions will be rejected.
