Iran and Turkmenistan to build friendship dam

Iran and Turkmenistan have signed an agreement calling for the construction of a US$167M storage dam on the river Tedzhen which forms part of the two countries’ border. The dam, to be called Friendship, will be 80m high and store up to 1200M m3 of water, according to Turkmenistan’s Water Re-sources Ministry. The project,which is expected to take around five years to complete, will allow irrigation of 20,000ha. The accord was initiated on 20 October this year during a visit to Ashgabat by Iran’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Kamal Kharrazi.
