ITD results weighed by Kol dam difficulties

19 March 2007

The Thai contractor reported a provision for a loss of Baht706M (US$21.5M) in the last quarter of 2006 against construction of Kol dam.

ITD said the provision was due to increased costs from delays in construction and increases in both material and labour costs.

While it added that while making a provision it 'should be able to' claim the funds due from the client, the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), the allowance follows a similar sum accounted for in the previous quarter for the same reasons.

In Q3 last year, ITD made a provision of Baht 758M against losses on the Kol dam contract.

The company signed the contract with NTPC in early 2004 to help build the hydro power scheme, which was scheduled to be commissioned in September 2008. In the 2005 annual report, ITD said the project in Himachal Pradesh state, India, was worth Rs7,269M (US$158M at 2005 currencies) to it and regarding ongoing work the AGM minutes of May 2006 put the remaining value at Baht5,649M (US$137M in currencies of mid-2006).

Kol dam hydro is more than a quarter complete and earlier this month ITD completed the right bank abutment and formally started placing of the clay and rock fill for the gravity dam.

The gravity dam is to be 167m high with a crest length of 474m and width of 14m, respectively. The volume of clay fill will be 2Mm3 and the dam will also contain 10Mm3 of rock and filter materials.

A surface power house at the dam will have four 6.45m diameter, 100m long penstocks conveying water to vertical 200MW Francis turbines. Two diversion tunnels have been built for the project, 900m and 920m long, respectively.
