JPS to study hydro expansion opportunities thanks to Japanese loan

17 June 2010

The grant will be used to conduct a feasibility study for a possible 8MW hydro scheme on the Great River in Western Jamaica. As part of the grant deal, a 5-member Japanese team (including technical personnel and a financial analyst) will be in the island for a period of 3-4 weeks, working alongside Jamaican technical and environmental expertise, to review the previous studies conducted on the Great River. They will also conduct further investigations into the quantity of water available and a range of technical issues, and determine the appropriate size and type of power plant for the area.

The grant award comes six months after JPS successfully recommissioned the Constant Spring Hydroelectric Power Station in St Andrew.
