Kamchay project starts operations in Cambodia

12 December 2011

The 194MW Kamchay hydroelectric project was officially inaugurated last week, with the country’s Prime Minister Hun Sen lauding the start of operations as a ‘historic event’.

The Kamchay project, located in southern Kampot province, reportedly cost more than $280M to build, and was funded by China.

The project has been criticized by environmentalists who say that it has destroyed hundreds of hectares of forest and farmland in the county.
