Kayaking opposition to Ugandan dam

3 December 2015

A champion kayaking team from Uganda say that the development of the Isimba dam on the White Nile River will deprive them of rapids where local athletes train to world class standards and international competitors visit.

The government has been accused of not taking the recreational and tourism attributes of this section of the White Nile into consideration as an important part of the local economy. Opponents say that although they understand dam construction is inevitable, at this point drowning of the rapids is not. Petitions have been signed for a compromise on a lower height bdam which would still produce much needed energy but will leave the rapids of the White Nile intact.
