Kishanganga to be run of river

25 April 2006

Originally the dam was to store 220Mm3 in a reservoir, but under the new configuration for the scheme there would be no storage or diversion of Kishanganga (Neelam) river water.

Pakistan objected that India cannot store water under Annexure E of the IWT. As a run of river scheme, it will now come under the IWT’s Annexure D.

The newly configured project would still generate 330MW, as before. According to India’s earlier plans, the Kishanganga project envisaged construction of a 103m high dam on the river and a 27km tunnel.
