24 November 2014

The 510MW Zangmu hydroelectric project on the Brahmaputra River in Tibet has become operational following the launch of one its six 85MW units yesterday.

Claimed to be the world's highest-altitude hydro project, and the largest in Tibet, the project is being developed by a Tibetan subsidiary of China Huaneng Group. Construction of the project was launched in 2007 and it is expected to become fully operational by August 2015.

The run-of-river project has been subject to some controversy, with India concerned about potential effects downstream, including flash floods.
