The plants would be in addition to the existing Batang Ai dam and the under-construction US$2.5B Bakun dam.

Mahmud said that one of the new projects could be located in Belaga district to accompany the 2400MW Bakun project, and the other could be in the Kapit division, bordering Indonesia's Kalimantan province.

The potential output of the new plants was not confirmed, but the Chief Minister did say that electricity generated by them could be exported to Peninsular Malaysia.
