Minister opens floodgates to UK hydro

17 August 2001

UK Energy Minister Brian Wilson announced a new deal for hydro when he attended the July 2001 opening of a newly refurbished hydroelectric power station in Scotland. The new measures include increasing the size of refurbished hydroelectric power stations to receive support from the government’s Renewables Obligation from 10MW to 20MW. Wilson also indicated that all newly built hydroelectric stations will fall under the Obligation.

‘This is a major signal today that hydroelectric power still has a huge part to play in the government’s strategy for renewable energy,’ Wilson said. For further information on the new measures and the impact of the Renewables Obligation in the UK.
