More Thai dams needed

4 July 2002

ALTHOUGH THE GOVERNMENT does not have enough funds for dam construction, Thailand needs more large dams to create more reservoirs, Irrigation Department director-general Kitja Polpasi said on 13 June.

The country currently has a capacity to store 32B m3 of water but the need for water will rise to 38 B m3 by 2007, Kitja claimed.

Speaking on the Irrigation Department's centenary, he said if no more large dams were constructed the country would face a serious water shortage.
