On 9 October 1963 more than 2000 people were swept to their death in the valley below Vajont dam in northeast Italy. A landslide fell into the reservoir at a speed of 96km/hr, after slipping from the flank of Mount Toc, and set up a 250m high wave which swept over the dam. The dam was not damaged.
Events leading up to the tragedy have now been made into a film called Vajont. The film premiered on 9 October 2001 when it was projected on to the dam wall, and was attended by mainly survivors of the disaster and their relatives.
