Mozambique to increase Cahora Bassa output

24 November 2011

According to the news service, the expansion project will cost $1B and will be funded by the operating company and private investors. Work is expected to start on the expansion in early 2013, following completion of geological and hydrological studies.

Most of the additional 1245MW of power will be used in Mozambique, but it will also supply the surrounding region.

Mozambique took over control of the Cahora Bassa project from Portugal in November 2007. The project was built in the Tete Region in 1975 and had been under the majority control of Portugal as an overhang from the colonial era, despite Mozambique having gained independence the same year.
